What is Ideal Body Weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a theoretical weight associated with the lowest mortality rate for a given height. However, it's important to understand that "ideal" weight varies significantly based on body composition, genetics, and individual health factors.

The Four Formulas

This calculator uses four well-established formulas, all based on height:

Devine Formula (1974)

Men: 50+2.3×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Men: } 50 + 2.3 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})
Women: 45.5+2.3×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Women: } 45.5 + 2.3 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})

The most commonly used formula, originally developed for drug dosing calculations.

Robinson Formula (1983)

Men: 52+1.9×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Men: } 52 + 1.9 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})
Women: 49+1.7×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Women: } 49 + 1.7 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})

Miller Formula (1983)

Men: 56.2+1.41×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Men: } 56.2 + 1.41 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})
Women: 53.1+1.36×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Women: } 53.1 + 1.36 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})

Hamwi Formula (1964)

Men: 48+2.7×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Men: } 48 + 2.7 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})
Women: 45.5+2.2×(inches over 5 feet)\text{Women: } 45.5 + 2.2 \times (\text{inches over 5 feet})

Limitations

These formulas have significant limitations and should be used as general guidelines only.

What these formulas DON'T consider:

  • Body composition (muscle vs. fat)
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Bone density
  • Overall health status

Athletes and muscular individuals may have a "healthy" weight that's significantly higher than these formulas suggest.

What's a Healthy Weight Range?

Rather than focusing on a single number, consider:

  1. BMI Range: 18.5-24.9 is considered healthy for most adults
  2. Body Fat Percentage: More accurate than weight alone
  3. Waist Circumference: Indicates visceral fat
  4. How you feel: Energy, fitness, mobility

When Are These Formulas Used?

  • Medical dosing: Calculating medication dosages
  • Dialysis: Determining treatment parameters
  • Nutrition: Setting caloric and protein targets
  • General guidance: Starting point for weight goals
